The explanation of the word of Allah the Exalted: وَأَنْ أَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا وَلا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ (10:105)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says: وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ — "and I have been commanded to be one of the believers" — and أَنْ أَقِمْ — "that I set my face." The second "an" is connected to the first "an" as a conjunction.
By His word (aqim wajhaka li-l-dīn) — "set your face toward the religion" — He means: direct yourself toward the religion of Islam, (ḥanīfan) — upright therein, without deviating from it toward Judaism or Christianity or the worship of idols — (wa-lā takūnanna mina l-mushrikīn) — "and be by no means one of the polytheists (mushrikīn)." He says: be not one of those who, in the worship of their Lord, set up gods and equals alongside Him, for then you will be among the lost.
