The explanation of the meaning of the words of the Exalted: ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي رُسُلَنَا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كَذَلِكَ حَقًّا عَلَيْنَا نُنْجِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (103) (Then We save Our messengers and those who have believed — thus is it an obligation upon Us to save the believers.)
Abū Jaʿfar says: The Exalted — glorified be His name — says: Say, O Muḥammad, to these polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people: Wait for the like of the days of those who passed away before you among the earlier nations, those who perished through the punishment (ʿadhāb) of Allah — for when it comes, it strikes none other than them and those who do as they did by denying you. Then We save thereby Our messenger Muḥammad ﷺ and those who have believed in him, affirmed him, and followed him in his religion, just as We did before that with Our messengers whose peoples We destroyed: We save them and those who, alongside them, believed in him from Our punishment, when that punishment was carried out against their peoples. كَذَلِكَ حَقًّا عَلَيْنَا نُنْجِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ — He says: Just as We did with the messengers of Ours who have passed away — We saved them and the believers who were with them, and We destroyed their peoples — so likewise do We act with you, O Muḥammad, and with the believers: We save you and We save the believers through you, as an obligation upon Us, without any doubt.
