   The explanation of the words of the Most High: فَهَلْ يَنْتَظِرُونَ إِلا مِثْلَ أَيَّامِ الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ قُلْ فَانْتَظِرُوا إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُنْتَظِرِينَ (102)

   (Do they then wait for anything other than days like those of the peoples who passed away before them? Say: Wait then! I too am waiting with you.)

   Abū Jaʿfar says: The Most High addresses His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, and warns the polytheists (mushrikīn) of his people of the descent of His swift punishment upon their courtyard — like that which descended upon their like before them, among the peoples who passed away before them and who walked the same path of denying Allah's messengers and rejecting the oneness of their Lord: Do they wait, O Muḥammad — these polytheists of your people who deny what you have brought them from Allah — for anything other than a day on which they will witness from Allah's punishment something resembling the days of their predecessors, who stood upon the same as they regarding the assigning of partners to Allah (shirk) and denial, those who passed away and vanished from the people of Nūḥ, of ʿĀd, and of Thamūd? Say to them, O Muḥammad, if this is what they are waiting for: Wait then for Allah's punishment upon you, and for the descent of His wrath upon you. I am among those who await your ruin and destruction through the punishment that Allah will cause to descend upon you.

   And in like manner to what we have said concerning this, spoke the scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl).

   17912 — Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words: فَهَلْ يَنْتَظِرُونَ إِلا مِثْلَ أَيَّامِ الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ — he said: "The blows of Allah upon those who passed away before them: the people of Nūḥ, of ʿĀd, and of Thamūd."

   17913 — Al-Muthanná related to me, he said: Isḥāq related to us, he said: Ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, concerning His words: فَهَلْ يَنْتَظِرُونَ إِلا مِثْلَ أَيَّامِ الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ قُلْ فَانْتَظِرُوا إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُنْتَظِرِينَ — he said: "He threatened them with His punishment, His vengeance, and His chastisement, and then He informed them that when any of that came to pass, Allah would save His messengers and those who believed with them. And Allah said: ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي رُسُلَنَا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كَذَلِكَ حَقًّا عَلَيْنَا نُنْجِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (Then We save Our messengers and those who believed — thus it is an obligation upon Us to save the believers)."

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : فَهَلْ يَنْتَظِرُونَ إِلا مِثْلَ أَيَّامِ الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ قُلْ فَانْتَظِرُوا إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُنْتَظِرِينَ (102) قال أبو جعفر: يقول تعالى ذكره لنبيه محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ، محذِّرًا مشركي قومه من حلول عاجل نقمه بساحتهم نحوَ الذي حلَّ بنظرائهم من قبلهم من سائر الأمم الخالية من قبلهم ، السالكة في تكذيب رسل الله وجحود توحيد ربِّهم سبيلَهم: فهل ينتظر ، يا محمد ، هؤلاء المشركون من قومك المكذِّبون بما جئتهم به من عند الله، إلا يومًا يعاينون فيه من عذاب الله مثل أيام أسلافهم الذي كانوا على مثل الذي هم عليه من الشرك والتكذيب ، الذين مضوا قبلهم فخَلَوْا من قوم نوح وعاد وثمود؟ قل لهم ، يا محمد، إن كانوا ذلك ينتظرون: فانتظروا عقابَ الله إياكم ، ونـزول سخطه بكم، إني من المنتظرين هلاككم وبوارَكم بالعقوبة التي تحلُّ بكم من الله. * * * وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. ذكر من قال ذلك: 17912- حدثنا بشر قال ، حدثنا يزيد قال ، حدثنا سعيد، عن قتاده،قوله: (فهل ينتظرون إلا مثل أيام الذين خلوا من قبلهم) ، يقول: وقائع الله في الذين خلوا من قبلهم قوم نوح وعادٍ وثمود. 17913- حدثني المثنى قال ، حدثنا إسحاق قال ، حدثنا ابن أبي جعفر، عن أبيه، عن الربيع بن أنس، في قوله: (فهل ينتظرون إلا مثل أيام الذين خلوا من قبلهم قل فانتظروا إني معكم من المنتظرين ) ، قال: خوَّفهم عذابه ونقمته وعقوبته، ثم أخبرهم أنه إذا وقع من ذلك أمرٌ أنجى الله رسله والذين آمنوا معه، فقال الله: ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي رُسُلَنَا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كَذَلِكَ حَقًّا عَلَيْنَا نُنْجِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ . * * *
