وَوَجَدَكَ ضَآلًّۭا فَهَدَىٰ

And He found you lost and guided [you],

    ( And He found you erring, and then guided you ) — that is, He found you in a different state from that in which you find yourself today.

    Al-Suddī said, concerning this verse, what was related to us by Ibn Ḥumayd, who said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī ( And He found you erring ), who said: He remained for forty years in the religious practice of his people. And it has been said: what is meant by this is: and He found you in the midst of an erring people, and then guided you.

    ( وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالا فَهَدَى ) ووجدك على غير الذي أنت عليه اليوم. وقال السديّ في ذلك ما حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا مهران، عن السديّ( وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالا ) قال: كان على أمر قومه أربعين عاما. وقيل: عُنِيَ بذلك: ووجدك في قوم ضلال فهداك.
