But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.

His statement: وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا ("And those who disbelieved in Our signs") means: and those who disbelieved in Our proofs, Our indications, and Our arguments — consisting of the Books, the messengers, and other matters — هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ ("they are the people of the left side"). He says: they are the people of the left hand on the Day of Resurrection, those who are led to the left side. We have already expounded the meaning of al-mashʾama, as well as why the left side is called "al-mashʾama," in what preceded, in a manner that makes it unnecessary to repeat it here.
