Exposition of the saying of Allah: وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَى رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ كَافِرُونَ (9:125) (And as for those in whose hearts is a disease: it has added defilement to their defilement, and they died while they were disbelievers.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: (And as for those in whose hearts is a disease) — hypocrisy (nifāq) and doubt concerning the religion of Allah — verily, the sūra that was revealed = (has added defilement to their defilement). And that is because they doubted that it came from Allah, and therefore they did not believe in it nor held it to be true. This, then, was an increase of doubt, newly arising with respect to the revelation of Allah, while belief in it was obligatory for them; rather, they remained in uncertainty about it. This, then, was an increase in the stench (natn) of their deeds, on top of the stench and hypocrisy that had previously issued from them and which was the like of this. And that is the meaning of His saying: (thus it has added defilement to their defilement) = (and they died) — He means: these hypocrites, namely that they perished = (while they were disbelievers) — He means: and they disbelieved in Allah and His signs.
