ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةًۭ مَّرْضِيَّةًۭ

Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

    And His word: ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ ("Return to your Lord"). The scholars of exegesis differed concerning its interpretation. Some of them said: this is an announcement from Allah, whose praise is exalted, about what the angels say to the soul of the believer at the resurrection — their command to it that it return into the body of its owner. They said: and by "returning" here is meant its owner.

    Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ * ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَرْضِيَّةً ("O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing") — he said: the tranquil souls are returned into the bodies on the Day of Resurrection.

    It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, saying: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say, concerning His word: فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي * وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي ("Then enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise (janna)") — Allah commands the souls on the Day of Resurrection that they return to the bodies, and then they come to Allah just as He created them the first time.

    Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: al-Muʿtamir related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of ʿIkrima, concerning this verse: ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَرْضِيَّةً ("Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing") — to the body.

    And others said: no, rather that is said to it at death.

    وقوله: ( ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ ) اختلف أهل التأويل في تأويله، فقال بعضهم: هذا خبر من الله جلّ ثناؤه عن قيل الملائكة لنفس المؤمن عند البعث، تأمرها أن ترجع في جسد صاحبها؛ قالوا: وعُنِيَ بالردّ هاهنا صاحبها. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس، قوله: (يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ * ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَرْضِيَّةً) قال: تردّ الأرواح المطمئنة يوم القيامة في الأجساد. حُدثت عن الحسين، قال: سمعت أبا معاذ يقول: ثنا عبيد، قال: سمعت الضحاك يقول في قوله: (فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي * وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي) يأمر الله الأرواح يوم القيامة أن ترجع إلى الأجساد، فيأتون الله كما خلقهم أول مرّة. حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا المعتمر، عن أبيه، عن عكرِمة في هذه الآية ( ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَرْضِيَّةً ) إلى الجسد. وقال آخرون: بل يقال ذلك لها عند الموت. * ذكر من قال ذلك:
