وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ

And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?

    And His word: وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ("And Hell (jahannam) is brought forth on that Day"). The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and Allah brings forth Hell (jahannam) on that Day.

    As al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafa related to us, saying: Marwān al-Fazārī related to us, on the authority of al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Khālid al-Asadī, on the authority of Shaqīq ibn Salama, who said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd said, concerning His word: وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ("And Hell is brought forth on that Day"), he said: it is brought, dragged along by seventy thousand reins; with each rein there are seventy thousand angels dragging it along.

    Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Yaḥyā ibn Wāḍiḥ related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, on the authority of ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdala, on the authority of Abū Wāʾil, concerning وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ("And Hell is brought forth on that Day"), he said: it is brought on the Day of Resurrection, dragged along by seventy thousand reins; with each rein there are seventy thousand angels.

    Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: al-Ḥakam ibn Bashīr related to us, saying: ʿAmr ibn Qays related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, who said: at His two sides are Paradise and the Fire; he said: this is when He descends from His Throne (ʿarsh) to His Footstool (kursī) for the reckoning of His creatures, and he recited: وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ("And Hell is brought forth on that Day").

    Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ("And Hell is brought forth on that Day"), he said: it is brought bridled.

    And His word: يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الإنْسَانُ ("On that Day man will remember"). The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: on that Day man remembers his negligence in the worldly life regarding obedience to Allah, and regarding that which brings him near to Him of good deeds. وَأَنَّى لَهُ الذِّكْرَى ("But how will the remembrance avail him?") — He says: from what direction would the remembrance be of any benefit to him.

    And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of interpretation have spoken.

    وقوله: ( وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: وجاء الله يومئذ بجهنم. كما حدثنا الحسن بن عرفة قال: ثنا مروان الفزاريّ، عن العلاء بن خالد الأسديّ، عن شقيق بن سلمة، قال: قال عبد الله بن مسعود، في قوله: ( وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ) قال: جيء بها تُقاد بسبعين ألف زمام، مع كلّ زمام سبعون ألف ملك يقودونها. حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا يحيى بن واضح، قال: ثنا الحسين، عن عاصم بن بهدلة، عن أبي وائل ( وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ) قال: يُجاء بها يوم القيامة تُقاد بسبعين ألف زمام، مع كلّ زمام سبعون ألف ملك. حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا الحكم بن بشير، قال: ثنا عمرو بن قيس، عن قتادة، قال: جَنْبتيه: الجنة والنار؛ قال: هذا حين ينـزل من عرشه إلى كرسيه لحساب خلقه، وقرأ: ( وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ) . حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة ( وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ) قال: جيء بها مزمومة. وقوله: ( يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الإنْسَانُ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: يومئذ يتذكر الإنسان تفريطه في الدنيا في طاعة الله، وفيما يقرّب إليه من صالح الأعمال ( وَأَنَّى لَهُ الذِّكْرَى ) يقول: من أيّ وجه له التذكير. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس، قوله: ( وَأَنَّى لَهُ الذِّكْرَى ) يقول: وكيف له
