His word: wa-jāʾa rabbuka wa-l-malaku ṣaffan ṣaffan (And your Lord comes, and the angels rank upon rank). He, exalted is His remembrance, says: and when your Lord comes, O Muḥammad, and His angels in rows, one row after another row.

As Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar and ʿAbd al-Wahhāb related to us, both of them saying: ʿAwf related to us, on the authority of Abū l-Minhāl, on the authority of Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he said: when the Day of Resurrection comes, the earth is spread out as leather is spread out, and to its breadth is added so much and so much, and the creatures are gathered upon a single plain, their jinn and their humans. When that day comes, this nearest heaven is broken down (qīḍat) upon its inhabitants onto the surface of the earth, and the inhabitants of the heaven alone are more than the inhabitants of the earth — their jinn and their humans — double over. When they are scattered over the surface of the earth, the inhabitants of the earth take fright at them and say: is our Lord among you? Then they take fright at their words and say: glory be to our Lord, He is not among us, but He is coming. Then the second heaven is broken down, and the inhabitants of the second heaven alone are more than the inhabitants of the nearest heaven and all the inhabitants of the earth — their jinn and their humans — double over. When they are scattered over the surface of the earth, the inhabitants of the earth rush toward them in fright and say: is our Lord among you? Then they take fright at their words and say: glory be to our Lord, He is not among us, but He is coming. Then the heavens are broken down, heaven after heaven; each time a heaven is broken down upon its inhabitants, they are more than the inhabitants of the heavens beneath it and all the inhabitants of the earth, double over. When they are scattered over the surface of the earth, the inhabitants of the earth rush toward them in fright and say to them the same, and they answer them the same, until the seventh heaven is broken down. The inhabitants of the seventh heaven are more than the inhabitants of six heavens and all the inhabitants of the earth, double over. Then Allah comes among them, while the communities lie kneeling in rows, and a herald calls out: today you shall know who are the people of nobility; let those rise who praise Allah under all circumstances. He said: then they rise and pass freely on to the Garden. Then he calls out a second time: today you shall know who are the people of nobility; where are those whose sides forsook their beds, who called upon their Lord in fear and hope, and who spent of what We have provided for them? Then they pass freely on to the Garden. Then he calls out a second time: today you shall know who are the people of nobility; where are those whom neither trade nor sale diverted from the remembrance of Allah, the performance of the prayer (ṣalāh), and the giving of the obligatory alms (zakāh), who feared a day on which the hearts and the eyes turn about? Then they rise and pass freely on to the Garden. When three groups of these have been taken away, a neck comes out of the Fire and surveys the creatures; it has two eyes that see and an eloquent tongue, and it says: I have been appointed over three of you: over every obstinate tyrant. Then it picks them out from the rows as the bird picks up sesame seed, and shuts them up in Hell (jahannam). Then it comes out a second time and says: I have been appointed over whoever wounded Allah and His Messenger. Then it picks them out as the bird picks up sesame seed, and shuts them up in Hell. Then it comes out a third time. ʿAwf said: Abū l-Minhāl said: I think he said: I have been appointed over the people of images. Then it picks them out from the rows as the bird picks up sesame seed, and shuts them up in Hell. When three groups of these and three groups of those have been taken away, the scrolls are spread out, the scales are set up, and the creatures are summoned for the reckoning.

Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to me, saying: Abū Usāma related to us, on the authority of al-Ajlaḥ, who said: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim say: when the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah commands the nearest heaven with its inhabitants, and whatever angels are within it descend, and they encircle the earth and whoever is upon it; then the second, then the third, then the fourth, then the fifth, then the sixth, then the seventh, and they station themselves row upon row. Then the highest Angel descends with Hell (jahannam) on his left side. When the inhabitants of the earth see it, they bolt away in panic, and they come to no region of the regions of the earth but that they find seven rows of angels. Then they return to the place where they were. That is the word of Allah: innī akhāfu ʿalaykum yawma l-tanād * yawma tuwallūna mudbirīna mā lakum mina llāhi min ʿāṣim (I fear for you the day of mutual calling, the day on which you turn your backs in flight; you have no protector against Allah). And that is His word: wa-jāʾa rabbuka wa-l-malaku ṣaffan ṣaffan * wa-jīʾa yawmaʾidhin bi-jahannam (And your Lord comes, and the angels rank upon rank, and that day Hell is brought forth). And His word: yā maʿshara l-jinni wa-l-insi ini staṭaʿtum an tanfudhū min aqṭāri l-samāwāti wa-l-arḍi fa-nfudhū lā tanfudhūna illā bi-sulṭān (O assembly of jinn and humans, if you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through; you will not pass through except with an authority). And that is the word of Allah: wa-nshaqqati l-samāʾu fa-hiya yawmaʾidhin wāhiya * wa-l-malaku ʿalā arjāʾihā (And the heaven splits, and it is that day frail, and the angels are at its edges).

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Muḥāribī related to us, on the authority of Ismāʿīl ibn Rāfiʿ al-Madanī, on the authority of Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, on the authority of a man of the Anṣār, on the authority of Abū Hurayra, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You will be held on the Day of Resurrection at a single standing place for the duration of seventy years; you will not be regarded, and no judgment will be passed among you; you are left to yourselves. You will weep until the tears cease, then you will weep blood and wail until that reaches your chins, or holds you back as with a bridle in the mouth, and you will lament. Then you will say: who will intercede for us with our Lord, that He may judge among us? Then they will say: who has more right to that than your father, whose earth and creation Allah fashioned with His hand, into whom He breathed of His spirit, and with whom He spoke face to face? Then Adam ﷺ is approached and that is asked of him, but he refuses. Then they ask the prophets in turn, prophet after prophet; each time they come to a prophet, he refuses." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "until they come to me; when they come to me, I set out until I reach al-faḥṣ." Abū Hurayra said: O Messenger of Allah, what is al-faḥṣ? He said: "before the Throne. Then I cast myself down in prostration upon the earth, and I remain prostrate until Allah sends an angel to me, who seizes me by my upper arm and raises me up. Then Allah says to me: Muḥammad — while He knows best — and I say: yes. Then He says: what is the matter with you? And I say: O Lord, You promised me the intercession; permit me to intercede for Your creation, and judge among them. Then He says: I have permitted you to intercede; I am coming to you and will judge among you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Then I go off until I stand with the people. While we are standing, we hear a tremendous sound from the heaven that frightens us. Then the inhabitants of the nearest heaven descend, in double the number of whoever is upon the earth of jinn and humans, until, when they draw near the earth, the earth is lit up by their light, and they take up their ranks. We say to them: is our Lord among you? They say: no, but He is coming. Then the inhabitants of the second heaven descend, in double the number of the angels who have already descended, and double the number of whoever is within it of jinn and humans, until, when they draw near the earth, the earth is lit up by their light, and they take up their ranks. We say to them: is our Lord among you? They say: no, but He is coming. Then the inhabitants of the heavens descend according to that doubling pattern, until the Compeller (al-Jabbār) descends in canopies of clouds and the angels, and they have a loud sound of their glorification; they say: glory be to the Lord of kingship and dominion, glory be to the Lord of the Throne, the Lord of omnipotence, glory be to the Living who does not die, glory be to Him who causes the creatures to die and who does not die, full of praise, full of holiness, the Lord of the angels and the Spirit, holy, holy, glory be to our Lord, the Most High, glory be to the Lord of omnipotence, dominion, majesty, power, and greatness, glory be to Him forever and ever. His Throne on that day is borne by eight, while today they are four; their feet stand upon the boundaries of the lowest earth, the heavens reach up to their waist-belts, and the Throne rests upon their shoulders. Then Allah places His Throne wherever He wills of the earth. Then He calls out with a call that makes the creatures hear, and He says: O assembly of jinn and humans, I have been silent from the day I created you until this day of yours; I hear your words and I see your deeds; so listen to Me, for it is only your scrolls and your deeds that will be read out to you. Whoever then finds good, let him praise Allah, and whoever finds something else, let him blame only himself. Then Allah commands Hell (jahannam), and it brings forth a rising, dark neck. Then Allah says: a-lam aʿhad ilaykum yā banī Ādama an lā taʿbudū l-shayṭāna innahu lakum ʿaduwwun mubīn (Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you should not worship Satan? Truly, he is a clear enemy to you) — up to His word: hādhihi jahannamu llatī kuntum tūʿadūn (This is the Hell that you were promised); wa-mtāzū l-yawma ayyuhā l-mujrimūn (And be separated this day, O criminals!). Then the people are separated from one another and they kneel down; that is what Allah says: wa-tarā kulla ummatin jāthiyatan kullu ummatin tudʿā ilā kitābihā l-yawm... (And you will see every community kneeling; every community is called this day to its book...) — the verse. Then Allah judges among His creation: the jinn, the humans, and the cattle; truly, He takes retribution on that day for the hornless beast against the horned, until no claim of any against another remains. Then Allah says: be dust! At that moment the unbeliever (kāfir) says: O woe to me, would that I had been dust! Then Allah, the Exalted, judges between the jinn and the humans."

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, his word: wa-jāʾa rabbuka wa-l-malaku ṣaffan ṣaffan (And your Lord comes, and the angels rank upon rank) — the rows of the angels.

    Footnotes:

In (al-Lisān: q-y-ḍ) part of this report from Ibn ʿAbbās is cited; he said: "qīḍat", that is to say: it was broken down. One says: "qudtu l-bināʾa fa-nqāḍa" (I broke down the building so that it collapsed). It has also been said that the meaning is: it was split, derived from "qāḍa l-farkhu l-bayḍa fa-nqāḍat" (the chick broke through the egg so that it split open).
