His statement: وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ ("Faces on that Day shall be humbled"). The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: faces on that Day — and these are the faces of the people who were disbelieving (kufr) in Him — shall be humbled. He says: abased.

    * Mention of who said this:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ ("Faces on that Day shall be humbled") — that is to say: abased.

Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: خَاشِعَةٌ ("humbled"), he said: humbled in the Fire.
