We will make you recite, [O Muhammad], and you will not forget,

His statement: سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلا تَنْسَى إِلا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ("We shall make you recite, and you shall not forget, except what Allah wills"). The Exalted, whose praise is mentioned, says: We shall make you, O Muḥammad, recite this Qurʾān, and you shall not forget it, except what Allah wills.
Then the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning the meaning of His statement: فَلا تَنْسَى إِلا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ("and you shall not forget, except what Allah wills"). Some of them said: this is an announcement from Allah to His Prophet — upon him be the blessing and the peace — that He is teaching him this Qurʾān and preserving it for him, as well as a prohibition from Him that he should hasten with its recitation, just as the Exalted, whose praise is mentioned, said: لا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ * إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْآنَهُ ("Do not move your tongue with it to hasten with it. Verily, upon Us is its gathering and its recitation").
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلا تَنْسَى ("We shall make you recite, and you shall not forget"), he said: he used to rehearse the Qurʾān to himself out of fear of forgetting it. Those who proclaimed this opinion said: the meaning of the exception in this place concerns forgetting, and the meaning of the expression is: you shall not forget, except what Allah wills that you forget and not retain. They said: that is what Allah abrogated of the Qurʾān, the validity and recitation of which He removed.
