By His word ( يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ , "On the Day when the secrets are tested") is meant: the day on which the inner secrets of the servants are examined, so that on that day there becomes manifest what in the worldly life was hidden from the eyes of the servants — namely the obligations (farāʾiḍ) that Allah had imposed upon them and whose performance He had made a duty for them.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the interpreters of the Qurʾān (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

It was related to me on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, on the authority of Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, concerning His word ( يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ ): he said: these are the fasting, the prayer, and the washing after ritual impurity (ghusl al-janāba); these are the secrets. For if someone were to say: "I have fasted," while he did not fast, and "I have prayed," while he did not pray, and "I have washed myself," while he had not washed himself — [then these secrets are laid bare on that Day].

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning ( يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ ): indeed, these secrets are tested, so keep the good hidden and make it manifest if you are able to do so — and there is no power except through Allah.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, concerning ( يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ ): he said: they are tested.
