The statement concerning the explanation of His word, exalted is He: وَالسَّمَاءِ وَالطَّارِقِ ("By the heaven and the night-comer") (1)
Our Lord swore by the heaven and by the night-comer (al-ṭāriq), which appears at night among the luminous stars and remains hidden by day. And everything that comes by night, that knocks (ṭaraqa).
And along the lines of what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of those who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: وَالسَّمَاءِ وَالطَّارِقِ ("By the heaven and the night-comer"), he said: the heaven and what appears in it by night.
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَالسَّمَاءِ وَالطَّارِقِ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الطَّارِقُ ("By the heaven and the night-comer. And what will make you know what the night-comer is?"), he said: a night-comer that knocks by night and remains hidden by day.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: وَالطَّارِقِ ("and the night-comer"), he said: the appearance of the stars; he says: it knocks upon you by night.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, he said: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His word: الطَّارِقِ ("the night-comer"): the star.
