His statement: إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ ("Indeed, the grip of your Lord is severe"). The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says to His Prophet Muḥammad — may Allah's blessing and peace be upon him: indeed, the grip of your Lord, O Muḥammad, against whomever of His creatures He seizes — and that is His vengeance against whomever He takes vengeance upon — is severe. And this is a warning from Allah to the people of His Messenger Muḥammad — may Allah's blessing and peace be upon him — that He may send down upon them of His chastisement (ʿadhāb) and His vengeance the like of what came down upon the People of the Trench (aṣḥāb al-ukhdūd), on account of their disbelief in Him, their denial of His Messenger, and their persecution of the believing men and believing women among them.
