فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ("then he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning"): in that his deeds will be examined, so that the evil thereof is forgiven him and he is rewarded for the good thereof.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken, and the report has been transmitted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

    * Mention of who said that:

Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, he said: Jarīr related to us, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ḥamza, on the authority of ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "O Allah, reckon with me with an easy reckoning." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the easy reckoning? He said: "That his evil deeds are examined and passed over. Verily, whoever is questioned strictly at the reckoning on that Day is lost."

Yaʿqūb related to me, he said: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, he said: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ḥamza ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr related to me, on the authority of ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in a part of his prayer: "O Allah, reckon with me with an easy reckoning." When he had finished, I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the easy reckoning? He said: "That his writing is examined and passed over. Verily, whoever is questioned strictly at the reckoning on that Day, O ʿĀʾisha, is lost."

Naṣr ibn ʿAlī al-Jahḍamī related to us, he said: Muslim related to us, on the authority of al-Ḥarīsh ibn al-Khirrīt, the brother of al-Zubayr, on the authority of Ibn Abī Mulayka, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: whoever is questioned strictly at the reckoning, or whoever is reckoned with, is punished. He said: then she said: the easy reckoning is only: a presenting before Allah, while He sees them.

Ibn Bashshār related to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb related to us, he said: Ayyūb related to us; and Yaʿqūb related to me, he said: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us, he said: Ayyūb informed us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Mulayka, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever is reckoned with on the Day of Resurrection is punished." Then I said: does Allah not say: فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ("then he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning")? He said: "That is not the reckoning; that is only the presenting. But whoever is questioned strictly at the reckoning on the Day of Resurrection is punished."

Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, he said: Rawḥ ibn ʿUbāda related to us, he said: Abū ʿĀmir al-Khazzāz related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Mulayka, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Verily, there is no one who is reckoned with on the Day of Resurrection but he is punished." Then I said: does Allah not say: فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ("then he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning")? He said: "That is the presenting. Verily, whoever is questioned strictly at the reckoning is punished." And he made a gesture with his hand at his finger as if he were poking it.

Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ("then he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning"). He said: the easy reckoning is that in which his sins are forgiven and his good deeds are accepted, and the easy reckoning is that for which one is granted remission. And he recited: وَيَخَافُونَ سُوءَ الْحِسَابِ ("and they fear the evil reckoning"), and he recited: أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ نَتَقَبَّلُ عَنْهُمْ أَحْسَنَ مَا عَمِلُوا وَنَتَجَاوَزُ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ فِي أَصْحَابِ الْجَنَّةِ ("Those are the ones from whom We accept the best of what they did, and over whose evil deeds We pass, among the inhabitants of Paradise").

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of ʿUthmān ibn al-Aswad, he said: Ibn Abī Mulayka related to me, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: O Messenger of Allah, فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ("then he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning")? He said: "That is the presenting, O ʿĀʾisha; whoever is questioned strictly at the reckoning is lost."

Ibn Bashshār related to us, he said: ʿUthmān ibn ʿAmr and Abū Dāwūd related to us, both of them said: Abū ʿĀmir al-Khazzāz related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Mulayka, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever is reckoned with is punished." She said: then I said: does Allah not say: فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ("then he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning")? He said: "That is the presenting, O ʿĀʾisha; and whoever is questioned strictly at the reckoning is punished."

If someone were to say: how can it be said فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ ("then he will be reckoned with"), when a reckoning takes place only between two parties, and it is Allah who keeps the record of their deeds, and no one has any claim against his Lord by which he would reckon with Him? Then it is answered: that is a confirmation from Allah to the servant of his sins, and an acknowledgment from the servant thereof and of what the record of his deeds has registered. That, then, is the reckoning (al-muḥāsaba) as we have described it, and that is why it is said: "he is reckoned with" (yuḥāsab).

ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī related to us, he said: Ibn Abī ʿAdī related to us, on the authority of Abū Yūnus al-Qushayrī, on the authority of Ibn Abī Mulayka, on the authority of al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no one who is reckoned with on the Day of Resurrection but he is lost." She said: then I said: O Messenger of Allah, فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ * فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا ("As for him who is given his writing in his right hand, he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning")? He said: "That is the presenting; there is no one who is reckoned with on the Day of Resurrection but he is lost."
