But they had not been sent as guardians over them.

( وَمَا أُرْسِلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ حَافِظِينَ ) (And they had not been sent as keepers over them). He, exalted is His praise, says: and these unbelievers, who said to the believers ( إن هؤلاء لضالون ) (truly, these are astray ones), had not been sent as keepers over them who would safeguard their deeds for them. He says: they had only been charged with belief in Allah, and with acting according to obedience to Him; they had not been appointed as keepers over others to safeguard their deeds for them and to track them down.
