And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.

His word: وَإِذَا انْقَلَبُوا إِلَى أَهْلِهِمُ انْقَلَبُوا فَاكِهِينَ ("And when they returned to their kinsfolk, they returned rejoicing") (83:31). He says: these criminals, when they returned from their gatherings to their kinsfolk, returned in luxury and self-satisfied.
In line with what we have said about this, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.
* Mention of those who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: انْقَلَبُوا فَاكِهِينَ — he said: self-satisfied.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: وَإِذَا انْقَلَبُوا إِلَى أَهْلِهِمُ انْقَلَبُوا فَاكِهِينَ — he said: he returned in luxury; he said: this is in this world, then the Fire followed in the Hereafter.
Some scholars who knew the language of the Arabs distinguished between the meaning of fākihīn and fakihīn; they said: the meaning of fākihīn is: being in luxury, and fakihīn: exultant. Others said: both have the same meaning, and it is exactly like ṭāmiʿ and ṭamiʿ (covetous), and bākhil and bakhil (miserly).
