Explanation of the statement of the Exalted: وَمِزَاجُهُ مِنْ تَسْنِيمٍ ("And its mixture is of tasnīm") (83:27).
The Exalted — exalted be His mention — says: and the mixture of this pure drink is of tasnīm. Tasnīm is the tafʿīl-form of the statement of him who says: sannamtuhum al-ʿayn tasnīman, that is: when you cause the spring to flow over them from above them. Its meaning in this place is thus: and its mixture is of water that descends upon them from above them and flows down upon them. Mujāhid and al-Kalbī used to say it thus.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word: تَسْنِيمٍ — he said: tasnīm: it rises up.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of al-Kalbī, concerning His word: تَسْنِيمٍ — he said: tasnīm: it pours itself out upon them from above them, and it is the drink of those brought near (al-muqarrabūn). As for the rest of the scholars of exegesis, they said: it is a spring with which the pure drink is mixed for the people of the right hand (aṣḥāb al-yamīn); as for those brought near, they drink it pure.
