His saying: وَفِي ذَلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُونَ ("And for this let the competitors compete"). The Exalted, whose mention is lofty, says: and toward this felicity which He, whose praise is exalted, has described as that which He has bestowed upon these pious ones on the Day of Resurrection, let the competitors compete. Competition (al-tanāfus) means that a man begrudges another something that belongs to the other, and that he wishes it would belong to him instead of to the other; it is derived from the precious thing (al-nafīs), which is that for which the souls of people are eager, which they yearn for and covet. The meaning of this, then, is: let the people exert their utmost effort for it, let them race toward it in striving for it, and let their souls be eager for it.
