1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَسْتَقِيمَ ("For whoever among you wills to go straight"). Thus the Exalted, whose praise is exalted, made this an admonition for whoever among the worlds wills to go straight, and He did not make it an admonition for all of them. The lām in His word: لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ ("for whoever among you wills") is a substitution (ibdāl) for the lām in "for the worlds." And the meaning of the statement is: it is nothing but an admonition for whoever among you wills to go straight upon the path of the truth, so that he follows it and believes in it.

   And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the interpreters of the Scripture have spoken.

   Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid — concerning His word: لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَسْتَقِيمَ ("for whoever among you wills to go straight"), he said: he follows the truth.

   ( لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَسْتَقِيمَ ) فجعل ذلك تعالى ذكره ذكرا لمن شاء من العالمين أن يستقيم، ولم يجعله ذكرا لجميعهم، فاللام في قوله: ( لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ ) إبدال من اللام في للعالمين. وكان معنى الكلام: إن هو إلا ذكر لمن شاء منكم أن يستقيم على سبيل الحقّ فيتبعه، ويؤمن به. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله: ( لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَسْتَقِيمَ ) قال: يتبع الحقّ .
