[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

And He recited: مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلأنْعَامِكُمْ ("as enjoyment for you and for your livestock").
He said: Ibn Wahb reported to us, saying: Yūnus and ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith reported to me, on the authority of Ibn Shihāb, that Anas ibn Mālik told him that he heard ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb — may Allah be pleased with him — say: Allah said: وَقَضْبًا * وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلا * وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا * وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا ("and fodder, and olives and palms, and densely planted gardens, and fruit and pasture-grass (abb)"). All of this we know, but what is "al-abb"? Then he struck with his hand and said: by your life, this is truly affected over-elaboration (takalluf). Follow what becomes clear to you in this Book. ʿUmar said: what becomes clear to you, act upon it, and what does not, leave it be.
And others said: al-abb is the fresh, juicy fruit.
* Mention of who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his statement وَأَبًّا ("and pasture-grass (abb)"), he says: the fresh, juicy fruit.
And his statement: مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ ("as enjoyment for you") means: We have caused these things which the children of Adam eat to sprout forth as enjoyment for you, O people, and as a benefit from which you take pleasure and profit; and that which the livestock eats, for your livestock. The original meaning of al-anʿām (livestock) is the camels, but thereafter it is used for every grazing animal.
And what we have said concerning this is what the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) said.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning his statement: مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلأنْعَامِكُمْ ("as enjoyment for you and for your livestock"), he said: as enjoyment for you the fruit, and for your livestock the grass.
