   Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the word of Allah: Toen de blinde tot hem kwam. He said: He was a man of the Banū Fihr, who was called Ibn Umm Maktūm.

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: Hij fronste en wendde zich af * toen de blinde tot hem kwam. That was ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zāʾida, and he is Ibn Umm Maktūm. He came to him to ask him to recite to him, while he [the Prophet ﷺ] was in private conversation with Umayya ibn Khalaf, a man of the notables of the Quraysh. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ turned away from him, whereupon Allah revealed concerning him what you hear: Hij fronste en wendde zich af * toen de blinde tot hem kwam, up to His word: terwijl jij je van hem afleidt. It has been transmitted to us that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ thereafter appointed him twice as deputy over Medina during two military expeditions (ghazwas) that he undertook, to lead its inhabitants in prayer.

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, on the authority of Anas ibn Mālik: that he saw him on the day of al-Qādisiyya, with a black banner with him, and wearing a coat of mail.

   Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, he said: Ibn Umm Maktūm came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was in conversation with Ubayy ibn Khalaf, and he turned away from him, whereupon Allah revealed concerning him: Hij fronste en wendde zich af. Thereafter the Prophet ﷺ used to honor him. Anas said: I saw him on the day of al-Qādisiyya, wearing a coat of mail, and with a black banner with him.

   It has been transmitted to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying concerning His word: Hij fronste en wendde zich af: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ directed his attention to a man of the polytheists (mushrikīn) of the Quraysh who possessed much wealth, in the hope that he would believe. Then there came a blind man of the Anṣār, who was called ʿAbd Allāh ibn Umm Maktūm, and he began to put questions to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ found that disagreeable and turned away from him, and directed himself toward the wealthy man. Then Allah admonished His Prophet, after which the Prophet of Allah ﷺ honored him [Ibn Umm Maktūm] and appointed him twice as deputy over Medina during two military expeditions (ghazwas) that he undertook.

   Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said — and I had asked him about the word of Allah, mighty and exalted is He: Hij fronste en wendde zich af * toen de blinde tot hem kwam — he said: Ibn Umm Maktūm came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his companion could see, while he [Ibn Umm Maktūm] could not see. He said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave his companion a sign to stop, but Ibn Umm Maktūm kept insisting and did not see it. He said: until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ frowned. Then Allah reproved him for that and said: Hij fronste en wendde zich af * toen de blinde tot hem kwam * en wat doet jou weten? Misschien zal hij zich louteren ... up to His word: terwijl jij je van hem afleidt. Ibn Zayd said: They used to say: If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had concealed anything of the revelation, he would have concealed this about himself. He said: And he used to direct his attention to that prominent man from his time of ignorance (jāhiliyya), in the hope that he would convert to Islam, and from this [blind man] he let himself be distracted.

   حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، في قول الله: ( أَنْ جَاءَهُ الأعْمَى ) قال: رجل من بني فهر، يقال له: ابن أمّ مكتوم. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة ( عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى * أَنْ جَاءَهُ الأعْمَى ) عبد الله بن زائدة، وهو ابن أمّ مكتوم، وجاءه يستقرئه، وهو يناجي أُميَّة بن خلف، رجل من عِلْية قريش، فأعرض عنه نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، فأنـزل الله فيه ما تسمعون: ( عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى * أَنْ جَاءَهُ الأعْمَى ) إلى قوله: فَأَنْتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّى ذُكر لنا أن نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم استخلفه بعد ذلك مرّتين على المدينة في غزوتين غزاهما يصلي بأهلها. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، عن أنس بن مالك، أنه رآه يوم القادسية معه راية سوداء، وعليه درع له . حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة قال: جاء ابن أمّ مكتوم إلى النبيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو يكلم أبيَّ بن خَلَف، فأعرض عنه، فأنـزل الله عليه: ( عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى ) فكان النبيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بعد ذلك يُكرمه قال أنس: فرأيته يوم القادسية عليه درع، ومعه راية سوداء . حُدثت عن الحسين، قال: سمعت أبا معاذ يقول: ثنا عبيد، قال: سمعت الضحاك يقول في قوله: ( عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى ) تصدّى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لرجل من مشركي قريش كثير المال، ورجا أن يؤمن، وجاء رجل من الأنصار أعمى يقال له: عبد الله بن أمّ مكتوم، فجعل يسأل نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فكرهه نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وتولى عنه، وأقبل على الغنيّ، فوعظ الله نبيه، فأكرمه نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، واستخلفه على المدينة مرّتين في غزوتين غزاهما . حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، وسألته عن قول الله عزّ وجلّ: ( عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى * أَنْ جَاءَهُ الأعْمَى ) قال: جاء ابن أمّ مكتوم إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقائده يبصر، وهو لا يبصر، قال: ورسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يشير إلى قائده يكفّ، وابن أمّ مكتوم يدفعه ولا يُبصر؛ قال: حتى عبس رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، فعاتبه الله في ذلك، فقال: ( عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى * أَنْ جَاءَهُ الأعْمَى * وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّى ) ... إلى قوله: فَأَنْتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّى قال ابن زيد: كان يقال: لو أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كَتَمَ من الوحي شيئا، كتم هذا عن نفسه، قال: وكان يتصدّى لهذا الشريف في جاهليته رجاء أن يسلم، وكان عن هذا يتلَّهى .
