    The discourse on the explanation of His statement: الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلاةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ (3) أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا

(Those who establish the ritual prayer (ṣalāh) and who spend out of that with which We have provided them (3). It is they who are the true believers.)

Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: Those who perform the obligatory ritual prayer (ṣalāh) according to its prescribed rules, and who spend out of the wealth with which Allah has provided them, in that which Allah has commanded them to spend it on — on the obligatory alms (zakāh), on jihād, on the pilgrimage (ḥajj) and the lesser pilgrimage (ʿumra), and on the maintenance of those whose support is incumbent upon them — so that they fulfill their rights — "it is they", He says: these who perform these deeds (51) — "the believers", not those who say with their tongues: "we have believed", while their hearts, out of hypocrisy (nifāq), apply themselves to the opposite of that, who perform no prayer and pay no alms (zakāh).
