Tafseer of Those who drag forth · An-Naazi'aat · 79:29
And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.

The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا (29) — "and He made its night dark and brought forth its morning light" (79:29)
And His saying: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) — "and He made its night dark" — The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: He darkened the night of the heaven. He attributed the night to the heaven, because the night is the setting of the sun, and its setting and its rising take place in [the heaven]; therefore [the night] was attributed to it, because it is accomplished within it — just as one also says "the stars of the night," because the rising and the setting are accomplished therein.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have expressed themselves.
* Mention of those who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His saying: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) he says: He darkened its night.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) he says: He darkened its night.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His saying: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) he said: He darkened.
Bishr related to me, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His saying: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) he said: He darkened its night.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) he said: He darkened.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) he said: the darkness.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, saying: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His saying: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) he says: He darkened its night.
Muḥammad ibn Sinān al-Qazzāz related to us, saying: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar related to us, saying: al-Ḥakam related to us, on the authority of ʿIkrima: ( وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا ) he said: He darkened its night.
And His saying: ( وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا ) — "and He brought forth its morning light" — says: and He brought forth its light, that is to say: He caused its day to rise and brought it into the light, and He illuminated its morning.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have expressed themselves.
