And His statement: إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِمَنْ يَخْشَى ("Indeed, in that there is a lesson for whoever fears") (79:26). Allah, exalted is His mention, says: indeed, in the punishment with which Allah punished Farʿawn (Pharaoh) in this near worldly life, and in His seizing of him as a deterrent punishment (nakāl) of the Hereafter and of the first life, there is an admonition and a lesson for whoever fears Allah and dreads His punishment. He expressed "the deterrent punishment of the Hereafter" (nakāl al-ākhira) as a verbal noun (maṣdar) derived from His statement فَأَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ ("Then Allah seized him"), for His statement فَأَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ means: He punished him with a deterrent punishment. Thus He made نَكَالَ الآخِرَةِ a maṣdar derived from its meaning, not from its literal wording.
