وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًۭا

And made your sleep [a means for] rest

    (And We have made your sleep a means of rest) — He says: And We have made your sleep for you a means of repose and rest, by which you come to calm and become tranquil, as though you were dead, perceiving nothing, while in fact you are alive and the souls have not departed from you. The words al-sabt and al-subāt mean: rest and stillness. And for this reason the Sabbath (al-sabt) is called "sabt," because it is a day of rest and repose.

    (وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا) يقول: وجعلنا نومكم لكم راحة ودَعة، تهدءون به وتسكنون، كأنكم أموات لا تشعرون، وأنتم أحياء لم تفارقكم الأرواح، والسبت والسبات: هو السكون، ولذلك سمي السبت سبتا، لأنه يوم راحة ودعة .
