لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًۭا

No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

    His saying: ( لا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلا كِذَّابًا ) — "Therein they will hear no idle talk, nor any lying" — The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: in Paradise they will hear no "laghw," that is, no false, vain words, "wa-lā kidhdhāban," that is: nor any mutual deception, namely that the one does not call the other a liar. The Qurʾān-reciters in the various regions read it with doubling (tashdīd) of the dhāl, as I have explained regarding His saying وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا ("and they utterly denied Our signs") — with the exception of al-Kisāʾī, for he lightened the pronunciation (takhfīf) for the reason I have described earlier. The doubling is my preference over the lightening, and the [prescribed] manner of recitation is with doubling. I do not deem the recitation of it with lightening acceptable, on account of the agreement of the authoritative proof of the reciters to the contrary. Among the instances of lightening is the verse of al-Aʿshā:

    "I believed her and I accused her of lying, and a man profits from his lying (kidhābuhu)."

    And in agreement with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: ( لَغْوًا وَلا كِذَّابًا ) he said: falsehood and sin.

    Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: ( لا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلا كِذَّابًا ) he said: and so it is, therein is no idle talk nor any lying.

    وقوله: ( لا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلا كِذَّابًا ) يقول تعالى ذكره: لا يسمعون في الجنة لغوا، يعني باطلا من القول، ولا كذّابًا، يقول: ولا مكاذبة، أي لا يكذب بعضهم بعضا، وقرأت القرّاء في الأمصار بتشديد الذال على ما بيَّنت في قوله: وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا سوى الكسائيّ فإنه خَفَّفها لما وصفت قبل، والتشديد أحبّ إليّ من التخفيف، وبالتشديد القراءة، ولا أرى قراءة ذلك بالتخفيف لإجماع الحجة من القرّاء على خلافه، ومن التخفيف قول الأعشى: فَصَدَقْتُهــــــا وكَذبْتُهـــــا والمَــــرْءُ يَنْفَعُـــهُ كِذَابُـــهُ (3) وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة ( لَغْوًا وَلا كِذَّابًا ) قال: باطلا وإثمًا. حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، في قوله: ( لا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلا كِذَّابًا ) قال: وهي كذلك ليس فيها لغوٌ ولا كذَّاب.
