His words: لِلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا ("for the transgressors a place of refuge") (78:22). Allah, whose mention is exalted, says: indeed, Hell (jahannam) has become, for those who transgressed in the life of this world and overstepped the bounds of Allah out of arrogance toward their Lord, an abode and a place of return to which they return, and a final destination to which they come and which they inhabit.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes also spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: لِلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا ("for the transgressors a place of refuge"), that is to say: an abode and a refuge.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: مَآبًا ("a place of refuge"), he says: a place of return and an abode.
