Abū Jaʿfar said: Then Allah informed His Prophet ﷺ of that about which they question one another, and He said: they question one another about the momentous tiding — that is to say: about the weighty report.
The exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning what is meant by "the momentous tiding." Some of them said: thereby the Qurʾān is meant.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the word of Allah: عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ ("about the momentous tiding") — he said: that is the Qurʾān.
Others said: thereby the resurrection (from the dead) is meant.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ ("about the momentous tiding") — that is the resurrection after death.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatāda: عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ — he said: the momentous tiding is the resurrection after death.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ * عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ * الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ ("About what do they question one another? About the momentous tiding, concerning which they differ") — he said: that is the Day of Resurrection. He said: they said: this is the day on which you claim that we shall be brought back to life, and our forefathers also. He said: thus they differ concerning it and do not believe in it. Then Allah said: nay, it is a momentous tiding from which you turn away — the Day of Resurrection, in which they do not believe.
