Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned?

Allah, whose praise is great, means by His statement: هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الإنْسَانِ ("Has there [not] come over man [a period of time]"): there has come over man. "Hal" in this place is a statement (khabar), not a negation. That is like when someone says to another, affirming it to him: "Have I not honored you?" — while he has already honored him; or: "Have I not visited you?" — while he has already visited him. And "hal" may, in other places, be a negation, as when someone says to another: "Does anyone do such a thing?" — in the sense that no one does that. And the man about whom Allah, whose praise is great, spoke in this place: هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الإنْسَانِ حِينٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ ("Has there come over man a period of time") — that is Ādam ﷺ. Likewise:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الإنْسَانِ — that is Ādam, over whom there has passed حِينٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْئًا مَذْكُورًا ("a period of time in which he was not a thing worth mentioning"). Man was indeed created here last of all; no creature of Allah is known to have come after man.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الإنْسَانِ حِينٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْئًا مَذْكُورًا , he said: Ādam ﷺ was the last of what was created of creatures.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, concerning هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الإنْسَانِ حِينٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ , he said: Ādam.
His statement: حِينٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ ("a period of time"). The people of interpretation differed concerning the duration of this period of time which Allah mentioned in this place. Some said: it is forty years, and they said: the clay of Ādam remained shaped, without the spirit being breathed into it, for forty years; that is the duration of the period which Allah mentioned in this place. They said: and for that reason it was said: هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الإنْسَانِ حِينٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْئًا مَذْكُورًا , because there had passed over him — while he was a shaped body into which the spirit had not been breathed — forty years; so he was indeed something, but he was not a thing worth mentioning. They said: and the meaning of His statement لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْئًا مَذْكُورًا is: he was not anything possessing standing, eminence, or honor; he was merely sticky clay and matured, moldable mud.
And others said: there is in this place no fixed limit for the period of time (al-ḥīn). Against this view it may be objected that Allah informed that there had passed over man a period of time, and it is not comprehensible in the language for one to say: "there has passed over man a period of time" before he existed and before he was anything; for when that is intended, one says: "a period of time passed before he was created," and one does not say "it passed over him." As for "the time" (al-dahr) in this place: no limit has been fixed for it at which one may stop.
