"When is the Day of Resurrection?" — as a postponement on his part of repentance. Then Allah made it clear to him and said: fa-idhā bariqa al-baṣaru wa-khasafa al-qamaru wa-jumiʿa al-shamsu wa-l-qamaru ... ("So when the eye is dazzled, and the moon is eclipsed, and the sun and the moon are brought together ...") — the verse.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Ibn ʿAṭiyya related to us, on the authority of Isrāʾīl, on the authority of Abū Isḥāq, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Qatāda, his statement: yasʾalu ayyāna yawmu al-qiyāma ("he asks: when is the Day of Resurrection?"), he says: when is the Day of Resurrection? He said: and ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: whoever is asked about the Day of Resurrection, let him read this surah.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: yasʾalu ayyāna yawmu al-qiyāma : when will that be? Then he recited: wa-jumiʿa al-shamsu wa-l-qamar ("and the sun and the moon are brought together"), he said: thus will the Day of Resurrection be.
