His statement: تَظُنُّ أَنْ يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ ("expecting that a calamity will be inflicted upon her"). Allah, exalted is His mention, says: she knows that a disaster will be inflicted upon her; and al-fāqira means: the disaster, the calamity.
And concerning what we have said about this, the people of interpretation have spoken in the same vein.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: تَظُنُّ أَنْ يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ , he said: a disaster.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning تَظُنُّ أَنْ يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ , that is to say: evil.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: تَظُنُّ أَنْ يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ , he said: she expects that she will enter the Fire; he said: that is al-fāqira. The origin of al-fāqira is: the brand that is placed with a notch upon the nose.
