Tafseer of The Resurrection · Al-Qiyaama · 75:10

يَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ ٱلْمَفَرُّ

Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"

    His statement: وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ("And the sun and the moon are brought together"). The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: and He brings the sun and the moon together in the loss of light, so that neither of them has any light left. In the reading of ʿAbd Allāh — according to what has been transmitted to me — it reads: ( وجُمِعَ بَين الشَّمْس والقَمَرِ ) ("and it is brought together between the sun and the moon"). It has been said: they are brought together and then rolled up, as the Exalted, whose praise is sublime, said: إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ("When the sun is rolled up"). And one says وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ (in the masculine form "wa-jumiʿa") for the reason I have mentioned, namely that the meaning is: there is a bringing-together between the two. Some grammarians of Kūfa said: one says "wa-jumiʿa" according to the manner of "the two lights have been brought together," as if it had been said: "and the two luminaries have been brought together." This is the statement of al-Kisāʾī.

    And in the spirit of what we have said about this, the interpreters (ahl al-taʾwīl) also spoke.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr told me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim told us, he said: ʿĪsā told us; and al-Ḥārith told me, he said: al-Ḥasan told us, he said: Warqāʾ told us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ("And the sun and the moon are brought together"), he said: they are rolled up on the Day of Resurrection.

    Yūnus told me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ("And the sun and the moon are brought together"), he said: they are brought together and then cast onto the earth. And His statement: إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ("When the sun is rolled up"), he said: it is rolled up onto the earth, and the moon with it.

    He said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Saʿīd ibn Abī Ayyūb informed me, on the authority of Abū Shayba al-Kūfī, on the authority of Zayd ibn Aslam, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, that one day he recited this verse: وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ("And the sun and the moon are brought together"), he said: they are brought together on the Day of Resurrection and then cast into the sea, and they become the great Fire of Allah.

    وقوله: ( وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: وجمع بين الشمس والقمر في ذهاب الضوء، فلا ضوء لواحد منهما، وهي في قراءة عبد الله فيما ذُكر لي ( وجُمِعَ بَين الشَّمْس والقَمَرِ ) وقيل: إنهما يجمعان ثم يكوّران، كما قال جلّ ثناؤه: إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ وإنما قيل: ( وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ) لما ذكرت من أن معناه جمع بينهما. وكان بعض نحويِّي الكوفة يقول: إنما قيل: وجمع على مذهب وجمع النوران، كأنه قيل: وجمع الضياءان، وهذا قول الكسائي. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد ( وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ) قال: كوّرا يوم القيامة. حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، في قوله: ( وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ) قال: جُمعا فرُمي بهما في الأرض. وقوله: إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ قال: كوّرت في الأرض والقمر معها. قال أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: أخبرني سعيد بن أبي أيوب، عن أبي شيبة الكوفيّ، عن زيد بن أسلم عن عطاء بن يسار أنه تلا هذه الآية يوما: ( وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ) قال: يجمعان يوم القيامة، ثم يقذفان في البحر، فيكون نار الله الكبرى.
