His word: كَلا بَلْ لا يَخَافُونَ الآخِرَةَ (By no means! Nay, they do not fear the Hereafter). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: the matter is not as they claim, namely that, if their unrolled scrolls were given to them, they would believe; بَلْ لا يَخَافُونَ الآخِرَةَ (nay, they do not fear the Hereafter), He says: rather, they do not fear the punishment of Allah, and they do not believe in the resurrection, the reward, and the punishment. That is what led them to turn away from the admonition of Allah, and what made it easier for them to refrain from listening to His revelation and what He sent down.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the interpreters of the Qurʾān (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: كَلا بَلْ لا يَخَافُونَ الآخِرَةَ (By no means! Nay, they do not fear the Hereafter): what corrupted them is that they did not believe in the Hereafter and did not fear it; that is what corrupted them.
