My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction."
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
"rabbi-ghfir lī wa-li-wālidayya wa-li-man dakhala baytiya muʾminan wa-li-l-muʾminīna wa-l-muʾmināt" (My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and the believing women) ... up to His word "tabārā" (destruction).
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, who said: Qatāda recited "lā tadhar ʿalā al-arḍi mina al-kāfirīna dayyārā" (leave not upon the earth a single inhabitant of the unbelievers), and then he mentioned something similar.
And His word "rabbi-ghfir lī wa-li-wālidayya" (my Lord, forgive me and my parents). He says: my Lord, pardon me and cover my sins and those of my parents. "wa-li-man dakhala baytiya muʾminan" (and whoever enters my house as a believer). He says: and whoever enters my mosque and my place of prayer as a praying believer; he says: as one who holds to be true the obligatory duty that You have imposed upon him.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of those who said that:
Bishr ibn Ādam related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Abū Sinān, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, concerning "wa-li-man dakhala baytiya muʾminan" (and whoever enters my house as a believer): he said: my mosque.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Abū Salama, on the authority of Abū Sinān Saʿīd, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, something similar.
And His word "wa-li-l-muʾminīna wa-l-muʾmināt" (and the believing men and the believing women). He says: and for the men who hold Your oneness to be true and the women who hold [it] to be true.
And His word "wa-lā tazidi al-ẓālimīna illā tabārā" (and increase the wrongdoers only in destruction). He says: and increase those who wrong themselves through their unbelief only in loss.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of those who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his word "illā tabārā" (only in destruction): he said: loss.
And I have already previously set forth the meaning of the speaker's word "tabirtu" with its proofs, and I mentioned therein the statements of the exegetes in a manner that makes it unnecessary to repeat it in this place.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, saying: Maʿmar said: al-Aʿmash related to us, on the authority of Mujāhid, who said: they beat Nūḥ until he fell unconscious; then when he came to, he said: my Lord, forgive my people, for they do not know.
