And already they have misled many. And, [my Lord], do not increase the wrongdoers except in error."

And His statement: (وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا كَثِيرًا) "And they have led many astray." The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says this while reporting the statement of Nūḥ: through the worship of these idols — which were fashioned in the likenesses of those men who are mentioned by name in this place — a great portion of mankind went astray. Thus the leading astray was attributed to these images, because their worshippers went astray through them, as though it were they who led astray.
And His statement: (وَلا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلا ضَلالا) "And increase the wrongdoers only in error." He says: increase the wrongdoers — those who wrong themselves through their disbelief in Our signs — only in error, only in a sealing of their hearts, so that they are not guided to the truth.
