Tafseer of The Ascending Stairways · Al-Ma'aarij · 70:44

خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۭ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.

    His statement: ( their gazes lowered ) He says: their gazes humbled because of the disgrace and humiliation in which they find themselves, ( humiliation covers them ) He says: humiliation overspreads them, ( That is the Day which they were promised ) He, Mighty and Exalted, says: this is the Day of which I have given the description, and that is the Day of Resurrection, which the polytheists of Quraysh were promised in the worldly life, that they would meet it in the Hereafter — they used to deny it.

    Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ( That is the Day ): the Day of Resurrection ( which they were promised ).

    وقوله: ( خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ ) يقول: خاضعة أبصارهم للذي هم فيه من الخزي والهوان، ( تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ) يقول: تغشاهم ذلة، ( ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ ) يقول عزّ وجلّ: هذا اليوم الذي وصفت صفته، وهو يوم القيامة، الذي كان مشركو قريش يوعدونَ في الدنيا أنهم لا قوه في الآخرة، كانوا يُكَذّبون به. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة ( ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ ): يوم القيامة ( الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ ).
