The explanation of His word: وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مَطَرًا فَانْظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُجْرِمِينَ (84) ("And We rained down upon them a rain; see then how was the end of the criminals") (7:84).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: And We rained down upon the people of Lūṭ, who had denied Lūṭ and did not believe in him, a rain of stones of baked clay (sijjīl), by which We destroyed them. (see then how was the end of the criminals), He says, whose praise is great: See then, O Muḥammad, the end of those who denied Allah and His Messenger among the people of Lūṭ, who committed sins against Allah, perpetrated the abominations, and held permissible what Allah had forbidden concerning the backsides of men — how was it? And to what did it come? Was it anything other than destruction and ruin? For that, or something similar to it in punishment, is the end of whoever has denied you and deemed himself too proud to believe in Allah and to affirm you, if they do not repent — among your people.
