The explanation of the saying of Allah: "The chiefs (al-malaʾ) of his people said: 'Indeed, we see you in manifest error.'" (7:60)
Abū Jaʿfar said: This is a report from Allah, exalted be His praise, concerning the answer of the polytheists (mushrikīn) among the people of Nūḥ to Nūḥ. They are "the chiefs" (al-malaʾ) — and "al-malaʾ" means: the assembly of men, without any woman being among them. They said to him, when he called them to the worship of Allah alone, without His having any associate: "Indeed, we see you," O Nūḥ, "in manifest error," by which they mean: in a matter that deviates from the truth, whose deviation from the straight path of truth is manifest to whoever considers it.
