His saying: إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ أَنِّي مُلاقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ ("Verily, I knew with certainty that I would meet my reckoning"). He says: verily, I knew that I would meet my reckoning when I would stand before my Lord on the Day of Resurrection.

And in the spirit of what we have said concerning the interpretation of His saying إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ ("I knew with certainty"), the scholars of interpretation spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His saying: إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ أَنِّي مُلاقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ , he says: I was certain of it.

Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ أَنِّي مُلاقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ : he supposed with a certain supposition, and Allah benefited him through his supposition.

Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His saying: إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ أَنِّي مُلاقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ , he said: the supposition of the believer is certainty, and "ʿasā" ("perhaps") from Allah is a firm assurance: فَعَسَى أُولَئِكَ أَنْ يَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُهْتَدِينَ ("then perhaps these will be among the rightly guided"), فَعَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُفْلِحِينَ ("then perhaps he will be among the successful").

Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ أَنِّي مُلاقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ , he said: everything that is a supposition concerning the Hereafter is knowledge.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Jābir, on the authority of Mujāhid, he said: every "ẓann" (supposition) in the Qurʾān [in the form] إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ ("I supposed"), he says: that is to say: I knew.
