The statement concerning the explanation of His word, the Exalted: فَلا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ (8) ("So do not obey the deniers (8)").
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says to His prophet Muḥammad — may Allah bless him and grant him peace: فَلا تُطِعِ ("So do not obey"), O Muḥammad, الْمُكَذِّبِينَ ("the deniers") — of the signs of Allah and His Messenger. وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ("they wish that you would yield, then they too would yield"). The people of exegesis differed concerning its interpretation. Some of them said: its meaning is: the deniers of the signs of Allah wished that you, O Muḥammad, would disbelieve in Allah, then they too would disbelieve.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ("that you would yield, then they too would yield") — he says: they wished that you would disbelieve, then they too would disbelieve.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, and he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His word: وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ("they wish that you would yield, then they too would yield"), he said: that you would disbelieve, then they too would disbelieve.
