And His statement: (إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ) (Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way) — He, exalted is His mention, says: Indeed, your Lord, O Muḥammad, is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, such as the straying of the unbelievers of Quraysh from the religion of Allah and the path of right guidance. (وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ) (And He is most knowing of the rightly guided) — He says: And He is most knowing of who is rightly guided and has thus followed the truth and acknowledged it, just as you are rightly guided and have followed the truth. And this belongs to the indirect modes of expression in speech. The actual meaning of the statement is: Indeed, your Lord is most knowing, O Muḥammad, of you — and you are the rightly guided one — and of your people among the unbelievers of Quraysh, and that they are the ones who have strayed from the path of truth.
