مَّنَّاعٍۢ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

    His statement: مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ ("a withholder of good"). The Exalted, Whose praise is mentioned, says: stingy with wealth, clinging to it and withholding it from the rights (due upon it).

    His statement: مُعْتَدٍ ("a transgressor"); He says: one who transgresses against the people; أَثِيمٍ ("a sinner"): one who bears sin against his Lord.

    And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his statement مُعْتَدٍ ("a transgressor"): in his conduct; أَثِيمٍ ("a sinner"): against his Lord.

    وقوله: (مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ ). يقول تعالى ذكره: بخيل بالمال ضنين به عن الحقوق. وقوله: (مُعْتَدٍ ) يقول: معتد على الناس (أَثِيمٍ ) : ذي إثم بربه. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، في قوله: (مُعْتَدٍ ) في عمله (أَثِيمٍ ) بربه.
