   And His word: ( هَمَّازٍ — "slanderer"), that is to say: one who slanders people and eats their flesh (backbites about them).

   In line with what we have said about this, the people of exegesis have spoken.

   * Mention of who said that:

   Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my paternal uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: ( هَمَّازٍ — "slanderer"), that is to say: backbiting (slander).

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ( هَمَّازٍ — "slanderer"): he eats the flesh of the Muslims (backbites about them).

   Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: ( هَمَّازٍ — "slanderer"), he said: the hammāz is the one who jabs people with his hand and strikes them, and not with the tongue. And he recited: وَيْلٌ لِكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُمَزَةٍ ("Woe to every slanderer, fault-finder"): the one who slanders people with his tongue. The origin of al-hamz is jabbing/pushing (al-ghamz), and that is why the backbiter was called hammāz, because he assails the honor of people with what they detest, and that is a jab against them.

   And His word: ( مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ — "going about with slander/tale-bearing"). He says: one who goes about with people's talk, of one against another, transmitting the conversation of one to another.

   Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of al-Kalbī, concerning His word: ( مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ — "going about with slander"), he said: it is al-Akhnas ibn Sharīq; his origin lies with Thaqīf, but he is reckoned among the Banū Zuhra.

   The statement concerning the exegesis of the word of the Exalted: مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ("who hinders the good, a transgressor, a sinner") (12) عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ زَنِيمٍ ("coarse of nature, and moreover a bastard") (13).

   وقوله: ( هَمَّازٍ ) يعني: مغتاب للناس يأكل لحومهم. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثنى أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس، قوله: ( هَمَّازٍ ) يعني الاغتياب. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة: ( هَمَّازٍ ) يأكل لحوم المسلمين. حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، في قوله: ( هَمَّازٍ ) قال: الهماز: الذي يهمز الناس بيده ويضربهم، وليس باللسان وقرأ وَيْلٌ لِكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُمَزَةٍ الذي يلمز الناس بلسانه، والهمز أصله الغمز فقيل للمغتاب: هماز، لأنه يطعن في أعراض الناس بما يكرهون، وذلك غمز عليهم. وقوله: ( مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ ) يقول: مشاء بحديث الناس بعضهم في بعض، ينقل حديث بعضهم إلى بعض. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة: ( هَمَّازٍ ) يأكل لحوم المسلمين ( مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ ) : ينقل الأحاديث من بعض الناس إلى بعض. حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال ثني أبي، قال ثني عمي قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس ( مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ ) : يمشي بالكذب. حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر عن الكلبي، في قوله: ( مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ ) قال: هو الأخنس بن شريق، وأصله من ثقيف، وعداده في بني زُهْرة. القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ (12) عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ زَنِيمٍ (13)
