And His statement: ( فَذَاقَتْ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهَا ) (And so it tasted the evil consequences of its conduct). He says: and so this town, which haughtily resisted the command of its Lord and His messengers, tasted the outcome of what it had done and committed of disobedience toward Allah and disbelief in Him.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning His statement: ( فَذَاقَتْ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهَا ) (And so it tasted the evil consequences of its conduct). He said: the punishment for its conduct.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: ( فَذَاقَتْ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهَا ) (And so it tasted the evil consequences of its conduct). He said: it tasted the outcome of the evil it had done; al-wabāl means: the outcome.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: ( فَذَاقَتْ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهَا ) (And so it tasted the evil consequences of its conduct). He says: the outcome of its conduct.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to us, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: ( فَذَاقَتْ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهَا ) (And so it tasted the evil consequences of its conduct). He said: the requital for its conduct.

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: ( فَذَاقَتْ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهَا ) (And so it tasted the evil consequences of its conduct). By "the evil consequences of its conduct" He means: the requital for its conduct that has already come upon it.

And His statement: ( وَكَانَ عَاقِبَةُ أَمْرِهَا خُسْرًا ) (And the outcome of its conduct was loss). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: And that to which their conduct led — and that is their disbelief in Allah and their disobedience toward Him — was loss, that is to say: detriment, for they sold the bliss of the Hereafter for a contemptible, paltry price of this world, and they preferred following their desires over following the command of Allah.
