The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ ("And obey Allah") — O people — in His command and His prohibition, وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ ("and obey the Messenger") ﷺ. فَإِنْ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ ("But if you turn away") — that is, if you turn away from obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger, being arrogant toward that, and you obey neither Allah nor His Messenger — فَإِنَّمَا ("then there is only"), meaning: there rests nothing عَلَى رَسُولِنَا ("upon Our Messenger") Muḥammad other than الْبَلاغُ الْمُبِينُ ("the clear proclamation") — namely, that it is a proclamation to you of that with which I have sent him. He, exalted is His praise, says: he has thus excused himself before you by the proclamation, and Allah is the master of retribution against whoever disobeys Him, opposes His command, and turns away from Him.
