The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ الَّذِينَ عَادَيْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ مَوَدَّةً وَاللَّهُ قَدِيرٌ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (60:7) ("Perhaps Allah will bring about, between you and those among them whom you have taken as enemies, affection. And Allah is All-Powerful, and Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.")
Allah, exalted is His mention, says: perhaps Allah will bring about, O believers, between you and those among My enemies of the polytheists of Quraysh whom you have taken as enemies, affection. And Allah did that with them, in that many of them accepted Islam, so that they became allies and partisans to them.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ الَّذِينَ عَادَيْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ مَوَدَّةً , he said: these polytheists — He has already done it; He brought them into the peace and placed affection between them when Islam came, at the time of the Conquest [of Mecca].
And His saying: وَاللَّهُ قَدِيرٌ ("and Allah is All-Powerful") means: and Allah has the power to bring about, between you and those among the polytheists whom you have taken as enemies, affection. وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ ("and Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful") means: and Allah is forgiving toward the fault of whoever showed affection to the polytheists, when he turns away from that in repentance; merciful toward them, in that He does not punish them after their repentance from that.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His saying: عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ الَّذِينَ عَادَيْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ مَوَدَّةً وَاللَّهُ قَدِيرٌ — capable of that — وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ — He forgives the many sins, merciful toward His servants.
