The explanation of His word: وَمِنْ آبَائِهِمْ وَذُرِّيَّاتِهِمْ وَإِخْوَانِهِمْ وَاجْتَبَيْنَاهُمْ وَهَدَيْنَاهُمْ إِلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ (And also from among their forefathers, their descendants, and their brethren; and We chose them and guided them to a straight path) (6:87).

Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: And We likewise guided, from among the forefathers of these whom the Exalted has mentioned — "and from their descendants and their brethren" — others besides them, whom He did not name, to the truth and the pure religion in which there is no ascription of partners (shirk), and We enabled them to attain it. "And We chose them," He says: and We selected them for Our religion and for the conveying of Our message to those to whom We sent them, just as We also selected those whom We named.

Of this one says: "someone chose such-and-such for himself (ijtabā)," when he picks it out and prefers it; "he prefers it, with a choosing (ijtibāʾan)."

And Mujāhid used to say concerning this what follows hereafter:

13516 — Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related this to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, regarding the word of Allah, the Exalted: "And We chose them," he said: We designated them purely for Ourselves.

13517 — Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, saying: Shibl related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, the like of it.

"And We guided them to a straight path," He says: and We set them aright and showed them the way to a path that is not crooked, and that is the religion of Allah in which there is no crookedness, namely Islam, which Allah, our Lord, has been well-pleased with for His prophets and which He has commanded His servants.
