The discourse on the explanation of His saying: (And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs, then turn away from them until they engage in another discourse. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not sit, after the remembrance, with the wrongdoing people) (6:68)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says to His prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: And when you, O Muḥammad, see the polytheists (mushrikīn) who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs which We have sent down to you, and concerning Our revelation which We have revealed to you — and their "engaging in [vain] discourse concerning it" was their mockery of it, and their reviling of Him who sent it down and uttered it, and their denial of it — "then turn away from them," He says: turn your face away from them, and rise up from beside them, and do not sit with them, "until they engage in another discourse," He says: until they pass on to a discourse other than mockery of the signs of Allah, in their talk with one another. "And if Satan should cause you to forget," He says: and if Satan should cause you to forget Our prohibition to you against sitting with them, and against turning away from them during their engaging in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs, and you afterward remember that, then rise up from beside them, and do not sit, after you have remembered that, with the wrongdoing people, who engaged in [vain] discourse concerning that which it was not theirs to engage in [vain] discourse about, in the manner in which they engaged in [vain] discourse about it. And that is the meaning of "their wrongdoing" in this place.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this the interpreters spoke.
* Mention of who said that:
13386 - Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, he said: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda concerning His saying: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs, then turn away from them until they engage in another discourse," he said: Allah forbade him to sit with those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning the signs of Allah and who deny them; and if he forgets, then let him not sit, after the remembrance, with the wrongdoing people.
13387 - Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, he said: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, with a similar narration.
13388 - Ibn Bashshār related to us, he said: Muʾammal related to us, he said: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, on the authority of Abū Mālik and Saʿīd ibn Jubayr concerning His saying: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs," he said: those who deny Our signs.
13389 - Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me, he said: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, he said: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs, then turn away from them until they engage in another discourse. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not sit, after the remembrance, with the wrongdoing people," he said: when the polytheists sat with the believers, they would attack the Prophet ﷺ and the Qurʾān, reviling him and mocking it; so Allah commanded them [the believers] that they should not sit with them until they engaged in another discourse. And as for His saying "And if Satan should cause you to forget," He says: Our prohibition, so that you would remain sitting with them — when you then remember it, rise up.
13390 - Al-Muthannā related to me, he said: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, he said: Shibl related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: "those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs," he said: those who deny Our signs.
13391 - Yaḥyā ibn Ṭalḥa al-Yarbūʿī related to me, he said: Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ related to us, on the authority of Layth, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, he said: Do not sit together with the people of disputation, for they are those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning the signs of Allah.
13392 - Al-Muthannā related to me, he said: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās concerning His saying: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs," and concerning His saying: الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا (Those who divided their religion and became sects) [Surah al-Anʿām: 159]; and concerning His saying: وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُوا وَاخْتَلَفُوا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ (And do not be like those who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them) [Surah Āl ʿImrān: 105]; and concerning His saying: أَنْ أَقِيمُوا الدِّينَ وَلَا تَتَفَرَّقُوا فِيهِ (That you establish the religion and not be divided therein) [Surah al-Shūrā: 13], and the like thereof in the Qurʾān, he said: Allah commanded the believers to unity, and forbade them discord and division, and informed them that those who were before them perished only through disputation and disagreements concerning the religion of Allah.
13393 - Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid concerning His saying: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs," he said: they mocked it. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was forbidden to sit with them, unless he forgot; when he then remembered it, he had to rise up. That, then, is His saying: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs, then turn away from them until they engage in another discourse. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not sit, after the remembrance, with the wrongdoing people." Ibn Jurayj said: The polytheists used to sit with the Prophet ﷺ because they wished to hear from him; but when they heard, they mocked. Then there was revealed: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs, then turn away from them," the verse.
13394 - Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, he said: My father related to us, he said: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs," he said: they deny.
13395 - Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, he said: ʿAbd Allāh related to us, on the authority of Isrāʾīl, on the authority of al-Suddī, on the authority of Abū Mālik concerning His saying: "And when you see those who engage in [vain] discourse concerning Our signs, then turn away from them until they engage in another discourse," by it He means the polytheists. "And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not sit, after the remembrance, with the wrongdoing people," [that is to say:] if you forget it and you then remember it, then do not sit with them.
