The explanation of His word: وَكَذَّبَ بِهِ قَوْمُكَ وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ قُلْ لَسْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ بِوَكِيلٍ (66) ("And your people have denied it, while it is the Truth. Say: I am not a guardian over you." (6:66))
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: And your people, O Muḥammad (ﷺ), have denied what you say, report, and announce of warning — "while it is the Truth," that is to say: and the warning that We have declared to them on account of their persistence in their shirk — namely the sending of a punishment (ʿadhāb) upon them from above them, or from beneath their feet, or dividing them into groups and making some of them taste the violence of others — is "the Truth" concerning which there is no doubt that it will come to pass, if they do not repent and turn away from that in which they persist of disobedience toward Allah and ascribing partners to Him (shirk), back to obedience to Allah and belief in Him — "Say: I am not a guardian over you," that is to say: say to them, O Muḥammad (ﷺ): I am not a custodian and not an overseer over you, I am only a messenger who conveys to you that with which I have been sent to you — "for every tiding there is a fixed time," that is to say: for every tiding there is a fixed point, that is to say a resting place at which it comes to a halt and an endpoint to which it comes, so that its truth and sincerity becomes clear, distinguished from its falsehood and untruth — "and you will come to know," that is to say: and you will, O deniers of the correctness of that of which I have informed you concerning Allah's warning against you, O polytheists (mushrikīn), know its reality when His punishment descends upon you — they saw that and beheld it, and thus He killed them on that day by the hands of His believing allies.
And in accordance with what we have said in explanation of this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
13381 — Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me, he said: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, he said: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: "And your people have denied it, while it is the Truth," that is to say: the Quraysh have denied the Qurʾān, while it is the Truth. And as for "the guardian" (al-wakīl), that is the custodian. And as for "for every tiding there is a fixed time": the tiding of the Qurʾān came to a halt on the day of Badr, with respect to the punishment which He had promised them.
